PLANET CERES: NASA Spacecraft Spots Inactive Volcano

Scientists believe a mountain on the pock-marked dwarf planet Ceres is actually a former salty-mud volcano which once spewed cold, salty water mixed with mud.

Despite the dwarf planet being just 1/13 the size of Earth, at 5 kilometers high the mountain is about half the height of Mount Everest.
The volcano, dubbed Ahuna Mons, is not active now, but the NASA research team behind the find were surprised to discover it appears to have been geographically recent.
"We're confident that Ahuna Mons formed within the last billion years, and possibly within a few hundred million years," NASA scientist Dr David Ruesch said.

This time period is considered relatively new, given our solar system is about 4.5 billion years old.

Dr Ruesch is one of the lead authors of a paper published in the journal Science about the find.

NASA plans to use the Dawn spacecraft's visible and infrared mapping spectrometer to determine the minerals that compose the surface of Ahuna Mons.
