Stunning new images from the depths of the Antikythera. There is and a second wreck there.
|Metal detecting. Bronze ring that pulled up and lagyna|
New scientific questions unearth the underwater research - found, inter alia, a bronze spear and a bronze ring, mounted in bronze nail.A bronze spear and a bronze ring, mounted in a copper nail, are some of the "spoils" of the research group of the Antikythera shipwreck.
The investigation of the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities supported by the Oceanographic Institute Woods Hole, which ran from September 15 until October 7 completed successfully despite the difficulties of the intense northerly winds.
During the investigation took place especially accurate surveying of the wreck site and created a three-dimensional model of bathymetric and photographic imaging.
At the same time, the findings of this year investigation are being placed, which include targets of intense signal from systematic survey of the seabed in the area with metal detectors, in order to ascertain the extent of dispersion of the wreck and surface finds. These illustrations were included in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) which are placed, as possible, in the known data of the first lifting in 1900, and with the details of the 1976 survey conducted by the then YPPE with supervisor archaeologist L.. Colona, in collaboration with the captain Cousteau, the crew of Calypso and Greek volunteers.
The result was the identification and eventually hauling of a solid bronze spear, which comes from a bronze or marble statue. At the same point was located and pulled up a bronze ring, mounted in a copper nail, which saves the strain of aggregate, which may include the wood itself, of the ship wherein was committed.

The new data clarify the picture of the wreck and its layout space.
Respectively, the close proximity to a second position, wherein clusters identified both amphorae and elements of the structure and the parts of the board, creates new scientific questions as to whether the position is continuation of the first or the remains of a second wreck.
